Swiss DolorClast Shockwave Therapy

The Lakes Orthotics are proud to present EMS SWISS DOLORCLAST® Master Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that assists with the body’s natural healing process. It involves sending shockwaves through your skin towards the painful, affected and damaged tissue.

How does it work?

Shockwave Therapy uses a handset to pass acoustic shockwaves through the skin to the affected area.  It is purely a mechanical wave, not an electric one. These audible low energy sound waves work by increasing blood flow to the injured area. This initiates an inflammatory response in the injured tissue, accelerating the body’s natural healing process by increasing blood circulation and metabolism in the affected area. The shockwaves can break down injured tissues and calcifications.

Cellular tissue microtrauma reactions can produce:

  • A reduction of pain felt by nerve fibres
  • An increase of blood circulation in surrounding soft tissue
  • Stem cell activation triggering the healing process

What is the success rate of Shockwave Therapy?

ESWT is a highly effective treatment for chronic tendon disorders and is widely used in practice. Research demonstrates a 70-80% success rate across a vast range of conditions.  It may not work for everyone, but it helps most people when other conservative treatments have failed. It has helped many people to avoid undergoing invasive or surgical treatments.

EMS SWISS DOLORCLAST® Shockwave Therapy is approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and is also FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved as a medical device. SWISS DOLORCLAST® is the only class III FDA approved Shockwave device.  All other devices are registered with the FDA as class I electric therapeutic massagers and are not classed as shockwave devices.  Electrical therapeutic massagers are designed for minor muscle aches and pains.

So when you visit The Lakes Orthotics for Shockwave Therapy, you can be assured you are getting the very best possible treatment the industry has to offer.

We’ll book an initial consultation and assessment to identify the best cause of treatment to ease your symptoms.

Check our availability and book an appointment with our Orthotist.  At your appointment we will discuss the issues you are having, carry out a full assessment, fully explain our findings, and then recommend a treatment plan.

What to expect during and after treatment

Most patients do experience some discomfort during the procedure. You will be asked how much pain you are in during the treatment and we will adjust the treatment accordingly to help manage this. The pain will stop at the end of your procedure.

You will be able to get up and walk straight away following treatment. If you do need need to take any painkillers you can take over the counter medication (such as paracetamol) but you should avoid non steroidal anti inflammatory or anti coagulant medication (ibuprofen or aspirin) or ice therapy as these can interfere with the body’s healing process. You will require a minimum of 3 treatments and up to 6, with one treatment per week.

Side Effects

Shockwave Therapy has only minimal risks. Typical device related non-serious adverse events are:

  • Pain and discomfort during and after treatment – anaesthesia is not necessary
  • Reddening of the skin
  • Petechia – small red spots caused by minor capillary bleeding
  • Swelling and numbness of the skin over the treatment area
  • These usually disappear within 36 hours after the treatment
