Functional and lightweight orthoses designed for children of all ages

Children’s Splints

The Lakes Orthotics are proud partners of Piro, a new and exciting type of AFO

For children with cerebral palsy and similar conditions, an AFO (ankle foot orthosis) and SMO is an amazing help in improving their mobility and control. Unfortunately, most of these orthoses tend to be heavy and bulky.

Piro is different. Very different. It is the thinnest, lightest and best looking AFO and SMO ever made. Piro uses the newest technologies such as 3D scanning and 3D printing to offer unparalleled comfort for your child.

Ankle Foot Orthoses are ideal for keeping feet and ankles in a good biomechanical position during standing and walking.

Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) are splints that are made to keep feet and ankles in a good position for standing and walking. They can be worn on one or both feet depending on the individual’s condition.

Some are fixed at the ankle and some have a joint or hinge.  They can be made in lots of different colours and patterns. Most of our AFOs are custom made and 3D printed usually from a scan of the lower leg and foot and will need to be adjusted/replaced with growth. We also offer more traditional thermoplastic AFOs and use resin casting techniques where scanning is not possible. Conditions that cause muscle imbalances such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida or muscular dystrophy are often treated using AFOs.

KiddieGAIT® provides young children an orthosis that will allow their little feet to move in a more natural gait pattern.

Kiddiegait is a dynamic AFO manufactured from carbon composite materials to allow the device’s dynamic features. It creates a functional environment to supplement gait function instead of immobilising and inhibiting it.

It can provide functional heel-toe gait, it is lightweight, uses less brace to do the same work as a traditional AFO, it provides a more fluid and productive gait that is less tiring.  All these benefits increase the child’s desire to wear the device and its lower profile design means it is much easier to fit into shoes than a plastic AFO.  Kiddiegait can be used for footdrop, unstable or low-toned gait, toe-walking, low-toned crouch gait and can also be used with a foot orthotic to increase control.

We have various appointments available that will give you the best course of treatment to ease your symptoms

Check our availability and book an appointment with our Orthotist.  At your appointment we will discuss the issues you are having, carry out a full assessment, fully explain our findings, and then recommend a treatment plan.

Lycra garments, also known as sensory dynamic orthoses are a custom made medical device designed to provide dynamic compression to increase sensory and proprioceptive feedback and provide musculoskeletal support.

These garments can improve positioning, posture and function, and assist with the management of abnormal tone.  Movements become more symmetrical, gait is improved and an improved body awareness is achieved.

Lycra garments can be gloves, socks, shorts or full body suits, and are often used for patients with the following conditions: cerebral palsy, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, stroke, low tone, Ehler Danlos Syndrome.
