How does Shockwave Therapy work?
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a non-invasive highly effective treatment in the reduction of cellulite. During the treatment, sound waves case micro-tears in the connective tissue and breaks down fatty deposits. These micro-tears increase the amount of collagen in the affected area as a means of healing. The collagen has a restorative effect meaning the tissues are replaced with a denser, firmer, and tighter rejuvenated frame. The visible result is lifted, firmer, smoother skin.
What is cellulite?
Medically known as gynoid lipodystrophy, cellulite is a condition where skin takes on a dimpled, bumpy appearance. It shows up as we age, party due to the decrease in collagen production and loss of elasticity in the skin. Once collagen levels drop, internal collagen fibres loosen and the underlying framework which supports the skin begins to sag as well.
Enlarged fat cells become lodged under the skin and as these cells get bigger the skin begins to bulge outward, giving the lumpy effect. The enlarged fat cells also block and restrict blood flow which then forms even more clusters underneath the skin. As the outer skin layer begins to thin out, the result is an ever-increasing irregular, bumpy appearance.
3 distinct stages of cellulite:
- Skin is noticeably dimpled when squeezing or applying pressure
- Skin is noticeably dimpled when standing, but not when sitting or lying down
- Skin is noticeably dimpled when either lying down or standing up
