Run 3D gait analysis
Latest technology to hit The Lakes Orthotics
Run 3D in a nutshell
Run3D is a specialist gait analysis service developed by scientists at The University of Oxford. It uses three dimensional motion analysis technology to measure how a person moves. This information can be used to treat existing injuries, prevent injuries and improve performance.
Markers are attached to your joints and infrared cameras record the positions of each marker while you walk or run. The cameras only pick up the markers and not you! We can then accurately calculate your joint angles in all three planes of movement allowing us to identify any abnormal patterns in your running and/or walking style.
This technology is the gold standard of biomechanical assessment used by research institutions and specialist orthopaedic hospitals. It’s also used in the film industry (think Andy Serkis as Gollum from The Lord of the Rings!)

Who can have a Run3D assessment?
Run3D is suitable for any musculoskeletal condition and can be used for both walking and running for persons of any age.
Any musculoskeletal lower limb condition or injury
Walkers and runners
Running related injuries
Overuse injuries
Foot and ankle pathologies such as achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, tibialis posterior tendinopathy
Knee and lower leg pain: knee OA, ITBS, shin splints, progressive calf pain
Hip pathologies: hip OA, hip bursitis, adductor, hamstring and quadricep injuries, SI joint and low back pain
Those who want to move better or are starting a new fitness regime
Do I have to be injured to benefit from a Run3D assessment?
Definitely not. As we are able to identify small biomechanical abnormalities in your walking or running style, we are able to prevent the development of potential injuries.
I’m not a runner, will I benefit from a Run3D assessment?
Yes! We assess walkers and runners and can help with injury management, prevention and performance issues for both.
- Recreational walking
- Dog walking
- Playing golf
- Hill walking
- Orienteering
- Nordic walking
- Geocaching
- Walking holidays
- Racewalking
- Rambling

What’s the difference between Run3D and the free assessment at my local running shop?
Research shows that only three dimensional assessments are accurate enough to detect the small movement patterns that cause overuse injuries. Since most running shops use only one or two cameras, they can only measure your biomechanics in 2D and are often inadequate for carrying out an accurate biomechanical assessment. In a Run3D assessment the three infrared cameras measure your biomechanics in three dimensions – the way the human body moves.
We offer a very specialised service and use the most advanced three dimensional clinical motion analysis that is available.
What to expect during a Run3D assessment
You will need to wear comfortable clothes you can move in, preferably shorts but tight leggings will work too. You will also need socks and whatever shoes you wear to walk or run. We can also assess with orthotics too so you can bring those to your appointment.
Run3D Silver Assessment

This is our baseline service and includes an objective 3D gait analysis of your walking/running on a treadmill using infrared cameras and state of the art technology to accurately identify your movement patterns.
The Silver Assessment does NOT include objective strength, flexibility, alignment and functional testing.
Allow 1 hour for testing
Run3D Gold Assessment

The Gold assessment includes everything in the silver assessment PLUS an objective musculoskeletal examination.
Strength, flexibility, alignment and function are all tested and together with the 3D gait analysis we get a clear picture of your gait and biomechanical function allowing us to provide evidence based recommendations.
Allow 2 hours for testing
What happens after a Run3D assessment?
You will be offered a follow up appointment, usually the following week where your results will be discussed in detail and you will get a comprehensive gait report. Your clinician will offer recommendations in the form of physiotherapy, exercises, orthotics, gait retraining, or a combination of these things. If you have done comparison testing with different footwear, we can also advise on the most suitable types of footwear for you.
Whether you are a walker or a runner, plagued with injury or trying to avoid injury, or trying to improve your performance…
…Run3D can give you the answers.
